This Male Lion Remains Loyal To His Sick Companion Until The End
Leo the male lion did not just survive alongside Muñeca, he stuck like glue to her through the best parts and the worst parts. These two lions spent most of their lives together, and when you watch the way he behaved as she got sick, it is hard not to feel your chest tighten.
The complicated part is, their story did not start in peace. In 2014, Animal Defenders International pulled Leo and Muñeca from a circus in Peru, and they were rarely apart after that, except for a brief moment during the rescue. Then, in August, Muñeca fell ill, and Leo went into full protective mode, hovering, snuggling, and trying to get her to eat.
When Muñeca passed away in September at 19, Leo was there until the very end, and his grief has been obvious ever since.
Leo and Muñeca, a pair of lions, have been together for the majority of their lives.

The moment Muñeca started feeling unwell in August, Leo stopped acting like a normal lion and started acting like her personal guard, snuggling up and nudging her toward her food.
As Muñeca was feeling unwell, Leo stood by and observed her. The male lion was so caring and demonstrated his affection by snuggling up to her. Those who observed this pair were overwhelmed with emotion and pity as they saw the beautiful animals.

After the 2014 Peru circus rescue, Leo and Muñeca barely had time apart, so when the rescue team saw him encouraging her to eat, it felt like the same bond, just turned up to maximum.
Leo, the male lion, has always been devoted to his wife, but since she fell ill in August, he has become especially protective of her. He has been at her side almost constantly to try to raise her spirits.
“Leo has always watched over Muñeca, but when she became unwell, he clearly realized something was wrong,” Creamer said. “He was seen trying to encourage her to eat her food and appeared to comfort her.”
