Lewis Jiminez Was Told to Choose His Home or His Pit Bull. Titus’s Shelter Reunion Touched Everyone
Lewis Jiminez faced the kind of choice no dog person ever wants to make: keep a roof over his head or keep his pit bull, Titus, by his side. What followed was a painful separation, a string of shelter visits, and finally the return both of them had been waiting for.
For Lewis Jiminez, Titus was not just a pet. He was family, the dog Lewis saw as his big kid and as part of himself. So when the management company at his building told him the pit bull had to go or Lewis would be evicted, it left him with almost no room to maneuver.
He did not have somewhere else to move right away, and he also did not have friends or relatives who could care for Titus while he searched for another place. That left Lewis with an option that broke his heart: take Titus back to the same Austin, Texas shelter where he had first adopted him.

In the clip below, the shelter captured the moment Lewis returned to pick Titus up for good.
Their story had started years earlier, when Titus was 2 years old. Lewis saw him at the shelter playing in the yard, full of energy and sweetness, and that was enough. He adopted him, and the pair spent the next five years together.
That history is what makes the shelter return so difficult to hear. Lewis was not walking away from Titus. He was trying to hold onto him the only way he could while he looked for a home where they could live together again. Staff members had seen plenty of people say they would come back for a dog and then never return, so there was every reason to be cautious. Still, this case felt different. They believed Lewis meant what he said.

Shelter life was hard on Titus
Titus did not settle in easily. He had been living in a home, and the shelter was a jarring change. Instead of quiet and routine, there was barking, concrete, and the stress that comes with kennel life.
The dog spent much of his time sitting in his kennel, looking miserable. The bright spots came when he got to come out to play, when he could run around and act more like himself. Another lift came when Lewis visited.
Those visits mattered. Titus would perk up when he saw Lewis, only for the meetings to end and the separation to hit all over again. Lewis left crying, which only strengthened his determination to solve the housing problem and bring Titus home.

The return Titus was waiting for
The breakthrough finally came when Lewis found another house. Better still, it had a big yard for Titus.
He went back to the shelter to get him, and the reunion was as emotional as anyone hoped it would be. Titus greeted Lewis with what the shelter described as a sweet smile, and Lewis wrapped him in a long hug. The moment was recorded on camera, and a photo from the reunion later spread widely after the shelter shared it on Facebook.
Lewis was deeply thankful to the shelter workers who had cared for Titus through the ordeal. He repeatedly thanked them for looking after his dog while he worked to fix a situation he never wanted in the first place.
For dog lovers, that is the part of this story that lands hardest. Lewis did have to leave Titus at the shelter. But he did not disappear, and he did not stop trying. He kept showing up, kept searching, and kept his promise. In the end, Titus was not left behind. He went home with his person, and the two were together again.
