K9 Logan, a police dog with the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, died earlier this week after suddenly becoming very unwell and being diagnosed with cancer. The loss has hit especially hard for the people who worked beside him, because Logan was not only an active and decorated K9, but also a dog remembered for leaning into people for affection when the job was done.

A sudden loss for Logan and the people around him

The sheriff's office said Logan became seriously ill over the weekend and was diagnosed with cancer. He died earlier this week with his handler, Deputy Tony LoRusso, the entire PCSO K9 Unit and additional K9 handlers from other agencies around him.

For dog lovers, that picture says a lot on its own. Logan was a working K9, but he was also part of a much larger circle. The agency said he was named after Wolverine, LoRusso's favorite Marvel character, and that he matched that name through his determination, dedication and work ethic.

The office also noted that Logan was LoRusso's third and final K9 partner, a detail that gives added weight to the goodbye.

A dog chosen early, and trusted with a lot

According to the sheriff's office, Logan was selected for law enforcement work when he was just 10 months old. He joined the Pinellas County K9 Unit in 2018, and in 2019 he added narcotics detection to his work.

His partnership with LoRusso stood out for more than routine deployments. The agency said the pair helped bring laser pointer directional cues and team integrated building searches into use for the unit. Officials pointed to a 2022 case as one example of why that mattered. In that incident, suspects fled from a stolen vehicle and hid inside a home, and the methods Logan and LoRusso used were especially useful.

Even near the end of his life, Logan was still working cases. The sheriff's office said that in his final week he located a felony warrant suspect from Georgia. In a separate felony drug investigation, he also helped uncover cocaine and methamphetamine.

Logan was a competitor too

Logan's accomplishments were not limited to field work. The sheriff's office said he was also an accomplished competition dog.

At the 2025 USPCA National Championships, Logan placed 16th overall. He also helped a four man team take second place at both Regional 1 and at Nationals. Those results added another layer to the image the agency shared of him: a dog who could perform at a high level in demanding settings, whether he was searching on duty or competing alongside other top teams.

What people will remember outside the job

As impressive as Logan's resume was, the details shared about his off duty personality may be what stick with many readers most. The sheriff's office described him as social and said he loved community demonstrations. He was also known for a simple habit that sounds instantly familiar to many dog people: leaning his body against someone so they would rub down his side.

At home, the picture was even more ordinary in the best possible way. The office said Logan loved endless games of fetch, pup cups and time with his family.

In its message after his death, the sheriff's office offered condolences to LoRusso, his family and Logan's K9 family. The agency also said Logan's heart and tenacity would remain with the unit.

That may be the part of Logan's story that lands hardest. He was still working, still finding suspects and drugs, still carrying a record full of specialized training and competition results. But the memories being shared now are not only about what he could do. They are also about who he was to the people around him: a dog with a serious job, a familiar lean for affection and a place that will not be easy to fill.
