Couple Adopt Banned Dog Breed To Help Sister-In-Law Escape Legal Trouble In Her State, Only For Her To Demand Adoption Fee
A frantic late-night call set off a chain of problems for a couple who never wanted a dog in the first place. They already had four cats and kept a calm space, but the husband’s sister (SIL) begged them to step in.
SIL lived in a place that didn’t allow her puppy’s breed, and instead of planning responsibly, she tried to hide the dog until everything fell apart.
By the time she reached out, she was panicking, claiming the puppy needed to be removed immediately, and even threatened to show up with the dog herself.
The couple didn’t want to take the dog, and they made that clear. SIL pushed anyway. At one point, she even told them to get rid of their cats, which pretty much summed up how little she cared about their life or routine.
After much pressure, they ended up taking the dog. But the real problem started when SIL requested to be paid $1,500 for it.
This was quite bizarre to the couple, as they argued that taking in the pup was a favor, and not an intended purchase.
While this argument was still raging, things got even worse. The couple discovered that, unlike what SIL told them, the pup wasn’t potty trained. In addition, it was extremely destructive.
By the end of the week, they decided that it was beyond what they could handle, and it became obvious the dog needed a different home.
After 3 weeks of searching, they were able to find a willing family for the dog, and the rehoming process was complete quickly. Unfortunately, this didn’t go down well with SIL, but she was ready to move on if they agreed to her earlier cash demands.
Both families have been at loggerheads, and the couple is eager to get a second opinion on this matter.

Let’s dig into the details

A bit of backstory

OP and her husband got shocked when SIL requested they pay $1500 for the dog. They also realized that they’re not cut out to cater to it, prompting them to consider rehoming the pup

OP and her husband found a willing family to take the pup, much to the disgust of SIL. Apparently, SIL still wants to get paid

We gathered some interesting comments from the Reddit community

“Why the hell do you keep caving in to this woman???”

“Let this be a life lesson for her, don’t spent 5k on an animal you can’t actually keep.”

“It would have been nice if you had given her the opportunity to take her puppy back before rehoming it.”

“You finally dealt with the situation appropriately and she just goes for the cash grab.”

“After dumping it you were entirely free to re-home it. Time to cut all contact with your SIL.”

“Sil created a problem all her own and tried to make it yours and then charge you for it. Stop crumbling.”

Family pressure can twist a simple favor into something stressful, and that’s exactly what happened here.
One side acted out of panic and poor planning, while the other tried to help and ended up carrying the fallout.
The dog found a stable home, but the tension around money showed how mismatched everyone’s expectations were from the start.
It raises a real question about boundaries and what helping a family should actually look like.
