Animal Advocate Shares Mind-Blowing Before & After Photos of Dogs Rescued from the Worst Situations
Some rescue stories hit hard, and David Fernández's work is one of them. At just 26, he has made it his mission to pull dogs out of awful conditions and give them a real shot at recovery.
These are dogs that often arrive matted, underfed, injured, or so neglected they barely look recognizable. Fernández works with foster homes and adopters to help them heal, then shares the results online for everyone to see.
The before-and-after photos are hard to believe, and the transformations only get better from here.
1. A dog you might not even look twice at before—a shining star, a beacon of hope afterwards.

2. This dog once looked like it had given up on life, but now it is the epitome of joyful living.

3. Proof that love and food go a long, long way.

The turnaround starts to feel almost unreal here.
4. Mange be gone.
Fernández lives and works out of Santiago, Chile. There is an overwhelming issue of stray and abandoned dogs in Chile.

5. She became a shining star.
Despite the looming problem in his community, the fact remains that Chileans take pride in their compassion towards dogs. As Dr. Helen Fisher, a biological anthropologist, states, "The bond between humans and dogs is one of the most profound connections we can experience, reflecting our innate compassion." This sentiment resonates deeply within Chilean culture, where many individuals actively participate in rescue efforts and advocacy for stray animals.

6. This dapper fella.
In Chile, entire communities frequently come together to provide both food and shelter for stray dogs, and they've really ramped up their efforts due to proposals to cull their stray dog population. The people are vehemently opposed to this, but it's a lot of work to combat.

7. A Very Good Doggo

8. Literally, a mind-blowing transformation.
Dogs left outside are vulnerable to abuse and inclement weather. Dogs with no families to turn to, living indefinitely outside, are susceptible to even worse: mange and other infections, fleas, and starvation. It's a horrible way to live and die, and without a doubt, it is unacceptable for dogs to be subjected to these experiences, given all they have done as companions to humans and the fact that their very existence on this planet is a blessing.

9. Fluffy, Curly. Love.
Additionally, the fact that Chilean communities come together to benefit stray dogs means that 57% of them genuinely believe measures to control the stray dog population other than euthanasia should be implemented! And their government appears to be listening.

10. Precious Little One
The Metropolitan Regional Council of Santiago is investing $3,678,000 (that is 3 billion Chilean pesos) in programs to spay and neuter stray dogs. This is a direct and intentional effort to slow the continuous growth of the stray population, and in many communities with stray animal problems, spay/neuter and release has worked very well.

This is the kind of glow-up that stops you mid-scroll.
This rescue feels just as urgent as the man who saved a dog one hour before scheduled euthanasia.
11. See the light return to her eyes?
Additionally, there have been recent changes to laws in Chile that are helping, too! Pet abandonment has been outlawed, and microchipping has become mandatory!

12. More Dapper Puppers

13. Fashionable as HECK

14. What a transformation—wow.
While Chile is making great progress in reducing harm, there are still obstacles to overcome.

15. A face any dog lover could love.
Local animal rescuers and shelters have both concluded that without public education, progress will be extremely slow. Policy changes alone are simply not enough.

16. Doin' a heckin' progress.
If the public can be better informed about the importance of spaying and neutering, the need for foster families, and encouraged to donate to shelters, the whole area has a much better chance of success!

17. A round of ah-paws for this precious girl.

By now, the pattern is impossible to miss.
18. He has come a long way, hasn't he?

19. Absolutely stunning.

20. Living a better life now.
David's work highlights the positive effects of rescue and rehabilitation, as well as the severity of the problem to begin with. He is effectively able to show what is wrong right now, but also what goodness can come from the right and intentional efforts.

21. Don't you just want to hug her?
Support for his goals continues to grow as well; his Facebook page has over 12,000 followers right now, and on Instagram, he is approaching 5k.

22. He's awesome, and he knows it.

23. Have you ever seen a dog smile? Here's another one.

These rescues make the happy endings feel earned.
24. Matted fur is a curse; recovery is a blessing.

25. A haircut does a dog good.

26. Groom away those problems; the good days are here at last.
