Vets Weigh In After Mom Gets Blasted Online For Spending $10,000 On A Controversial Dog Breed

The newest puppy fad that has generated a lot of debate on social media is "velvet Frenchies." The dog breed is a subgroup of the well-known French Bulldog breed, and people have been spending thousands of dollars to own one.

Despite the fact that some people think the puppies are "adorable," vets have given their one cent on the several health problems associated with the breed. It is said that regular French Bulldogs and Shar Peis are crossed to create Velvet Frenchies, who are named for their silky, velvety coats.

Because of this, the facial wrinkles of this relatively young breed are frequently more prominent. According to Lemonade Insurance, a purebred French Bulldog can cost anywhere from $1,500 to $8,000 from a breeder, but some dog owners are prepared to shell out a hefty sum of cash to own a fluffy Frenchie.

In fact, a woman going by the name Yohana went viral after disclosing that she had purchased a Velvet Frenchie for a whopping $10,000. Yohana posted a video on her TikTok profile of her family picking up her pricey, wrinkled puppy.

It features noticeable, expressive creases on its face and seems to have been a light-colored, tan Velvet Frenchie. One of Yohana's kids was holding the four-legged companion, which had light blue eyes and big, pointed ears.

Tracy Lynn, who breeds this species at her Mogul Bulldogs kennel, stated that her puppies cost between $20,000 and $40,000 and that she had previously purchased her male dog for $40,000. Tracy told Bored Panda in an email that the dog's "behavior is the same as the standard Frenchies.”

According to Hill's Pet, the French Bulldog is a calm house dog that loves being the center of attention. The breed, which is frequently referred to as "Frenchie," is said to be perfect for a one-person home. Tracy, who owns a kennel dog breeding business in Texas, USA, registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC), says two Velvet Frenchies shouldn't be bred together since the puppies they produce may have too many "extreme" wrinkles.

“It’s random if the babies will come out as velvets or standard frenchies,” Tracy said. “Their hair sheds a whole lot less so they are better for homes who need dogs with less shedding.”

Since it can take years to create a new breed, Velvet Frenchies are not a new breed, according to Dr. Elizabeth Rozanski, a veterinarian and professor at Tufts University in Massachusetts, USA.

One TikTok user disagreed with the others who declared the puppy to be "freaking cute," "priceless," and "adorable," saying, "I will never understand this." Check out more of people's comments as you scroll down below.

Their origins and health claims are still unknown because much of the information about them lacks reliable evidence, according to Doctor Rozanski. This is despite the fact that they are believed to have a softer, less bristly coat than typical French Bulldogs.

The breeding of Velvet Frenchies and other dogs with health issues is a social problem, according to Professor Daniel Mills, a veterinary specialist at the University of Lincoln in the United Kingdom. Professor Mills said that characteristics like additional wrinkles or the silky coats that appeal to human aspirations could make the many health issues that French Bulldogs currently have worse.
