Easter Egg Hunt Ruined By Off-Lead Dog In A Rules-Required Park
An Easter egg hunt in a rules-required public park turned into a full-on blame game, and the worst part is, both sides have a point. One parent thought they were just following the vibe of a community event, while another insisted a dog being off-lead was no big deal. Then an off-lead dog got involved, and suddenly the chocolate eggs became the center of everything, because chocolate can be dangerous to dogs, even if it only happens briefly. OP is getting hit with the argument that “you could have hidden eggs at home,” but the park is still a shared place where posted rules are supposed to matter.
Now everyone is stuck arguing about responsibility, rules, and whether the dog owner or OP is the real problem.

OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole:

A public park....

"Put the eggs in YOUR garden or in your living space. "

Chocolate is toxic for lots of animals, not just dogs.

"What happens if you missed an egg and went home?"

Kids don't always find all eggs...

"She blames the dog for being in a dog park."

A public place, not OP's backyard.

Public places tend to be used by the public

"There’s no reason you can’t hide eggs on your property or even inside your home. "

"It could also have happened to a dog on a lead."

The moment OP mentioned the posted “rules-required” park, the whole conversation shifted from “cute holiday” to “who broke protocol first.”
The dog owner’s defense, that it could have happened to a dog on a lead too, did not land well with OP, especially after the chocolate-to-dogs risk came up.
OP’s “what if someone missed an egg and went home” point made the argument feel less like drama and more like safety math.
And when the blame went straight to “she blames the dog for being in a dog park,” it turned a simple Easter hunt into a public rule war.
Both sides have a point. Chocolate is genuinely dangerous to dogs, and leaving it in a shared public space carries some risk - even briefly.
Responsibility here is not entirely one-sided, but the dog owner's failure to follow posted rules remains the most direct cause of the incident.
Nobody leaves an Easter egg hunt expecting to fight about leash rules and chocolate safety.
Wait until you see what happened when a Lowe’s shopper’s leg got wet after an unleashed lab sniffed them.
