"Jungle Dog" Rescues Vancouver Couple Who Were Lost and Terrified on Remote Hike in the Cambodian Jungle
Dogs have a way of turning an ordinary day into a story nobody forgets, and this one starts deep in the Cambodian jungle. What was supposed to be a short walk to a quiet beach on Koh Rong turned into a frightening detour for a Vancouver couple who suddenly found themselves lost, hot, and surrounded by thick vegetation.
Ili Yang and Yannick were traveling through Cambodia and Southeast Asia for food inspiration when they decided to take a break from tasting and exploring. Instead, a simple 45-minute hike became a stressful search for the right path, with GPS only helping so much once the jungle closed in around them.
Then a friendly local dog appeared at exactly the right moment, and the whole trip took a surprising turn.

Recalling the scary situation, Ili told the reporters:
“It was very confusing, as there were many potential directions that could be followed. Everything looked like some sort of trodden path, but none were an obvious trail.”
Ili began to panic; her fear of insects kicked in as she realized she was “stuck in the middle of some jungle, having to walk through webs and swatting away mosquitoes and flies.”
They checked their GPS for their position and realized they had covered about 60% of the distance to the beach, so they thought it would be better to continue than to turn back. However, Ili admitted the “path forward didn’t seem very certain either,” and considering they were in the jungle, they couldn’t rely on Google Maps for direction.
After almost an hour of walking through the jungle, just as Ili started “losing it,” a fluffy, four-legged savior showed up.
Ili described the dog as “smiling and wagging his tail as if to invite us to follow him,” and with “nothing to lose,” the couple chose to do precisely that. They ran after the pup, and even though he soon vanished from their line of sight, they realized he had led them to a path that got them back on course.

After the first encounter, the dog re-emerged on three separate occasions, each time guiding the tourists onto the right path whenever they began to go the wrong way.
Ili continued:
“The amazing jungle pup appeared just as I began to panic, around the one-hour mark. It was really great timing.
The fourth time we found him, we caught a quick glimpse of him, so we followed again. This time, we ended up following him onto the actual trail! We followed this far more trodden trail for about a minute before we found him again.”

Sometime later, on the main path, Ili and Yannick found the “jungle dog” waiting for them on a boulder, taking a well-deserved break from his navigator role. The couple sat down to take a break with him and caressed him to thank him for his hard work. It was very hot, so they shared their water with him.
Ili remembers the encounter:
“It was kind of amazing to realize this dog was able to lead us back on track. We could see where the path was on Google Maps, but whenever we tried to walk toward it, we would be faced with thick vegetation that we could not get through.
The dog definitely knew all the best paths. I want to believe that he knew we needed help and came to our rescue.”

It’s not known where the dog came from, although Ili mentioned there were numerous street dogs on Koh Rong who “live a super chill life” on the island.
Thanks to this dog’s actions, the couple was able to regain their bearings after an hour of roaming the woods, and they were able to resume their trip as scheduled.
That jungle dog picked the perfect moment to become a guide.
