Lady Gets An Unexpected Reaction From Grieving BF After Gifting Him A New Puppy
A 28-year-old woman thought she was doing something sweet, she bought her grieving boyfriend a brand-new puppy after he lost someone close. In her mind, it was a fresh start, a little comfort, something to soften the blow.
Then she hit a wall, hard. The boyfriend did not react the way she expected, and the comments exploded once the post went live, especially around the kind of dog she chose, pugs. OP called pugs “extremely unethical ugly and poorly bred animals,” and that set off a whole other debate about breeders, adoption, and whether gifting a pet is even a good idea when grief is still raw.
By the time everyone weighed in, it was less “aww, puppy” and more “wait, did she just accidentally make his mourning worse?”
The OP kicks off her story

“Pugs are extremely unethical ugly and poorly bred animals”

The OP thinks that’s so hurtful to the puppy who did nothing wrong

As usual, the comments rolled in and we've gathered some of them for you below

This Redditor is with OP's bf on the pug issue

It will make the OP seem like she's getting rid of his grief

Do not go buying someone a pet

OP’s boyfriend’s reaction to the pug gift is where the whole thread turns, because it feels like comfort, until it doesn’t.
This also mirrors the grieving lady who’s about to lose her late boyfriend’s dog to his mom, asking for advice.
Once OP argued that breeders are “valid” as long as they are not backyard breeding, the pug debate turned into a full-on ethics war in the comments.
People also kept calling out the timing and the burden angle, saying he shouldn’t have to take on dog care while he’s still grieving.
The OP replied the above comment saying...
Okay no, breeders are an extremely important and valid profession so long as they aren’t backyard breeding and know what they are doing.
I will not be shamed because “adopt don’t shop”
The OP chose such a bad type of dog for her bf

He shouldn't have the burden of looking after a dog

OP's intentions might be nice but the gesture wasn't necessary

The OP made a huge mistake and she needs to fix it

The most brutal line compared pet loss to losing a piece of property, and that’s what made OP look like she missed the point of his grief.
If a person dies, there would have been the customary burial rites, and it would have made sense to be an emotional wreck. However, the loss of a pet is viewed in some cases more like the loss of a car.
You should simply go get a new one and continue living life. In an effort to cheer the bereaved up, well-meaning friends and family would suggest a new pet.
They fail to understand that the person has lost an invaluable relationship rather than a piece of property. OP failed to understand her BF's grief, and she was declared the AH for her actions.
Now OP is stuck wondering if her “cheer him up” puppy plan was actually the worst timing imaginable.
Before you judge her, read how Redditor refused a gifted dog and called it “heartless.”
