We've all been there: you see a dog, and you want to pet the dog. In years past, it was all too easy for anyone and everyone to pet any dog they saw, but today you can't just do that. We've learned the hard way many times over that dogs have boundaries too, and people should ask permission to pet dogs they don't know.

Every morning, as Sarah Elkins headed into work for the day, she noticed a dog in the yard near her office. The adorable puppy always seemed to be so happy, and Sarah desperately wanted to go over and pet her but didn't want to do so without the dog's owner's permission.

That alone is a great lesson Elkins teaches us all about petting dogs. The happiest dog in the world still deserves you to ask permission to pet her!

"I started telling her she was a pretty girl, and soon she began sticking her nose through the fence and wagging her tail, but I never wanted to intrude on her space," Elkins said. So, Sarah decided she just had to find a way to get permission to pet the dog.

"She saw me come out of my office door from her yard and greeted me at the gate with a full-body wag and a smile," Elkins said.

"I couldn’t take it anymore and ran back to the office to print the sign."

Sarah decided she would make a sign to ask the dog's family if she could pet her.

Sarah hung the sign just inside the gate so the family would see it and then waited patiently for a response. The next day, as Sarah was on her way to work, she was excited to see that the family had indeed left an answer.

The note said, "OF COURSE! Her name is Sparrow, and she is a good girl." Naturally, Sarah was thrilled!

"I was a little nervous that the answer would be no, but it wasn’t," Elkins said.

"Even better, Sparrow was there with her tail wagging so fast that it moved her whole body side to side."

Sarah now visits Sparrow every morning and throughout the day to give her lots of love.

"Sometimes she will even put her paws on the fence to get a hug," Elkins said. So cute!
