Parkland High School Made A Yearbook Of All The Therapy Dogs Used By Kids Involved In The School Tragedy
Parkland High School found a surprisingly tender way to remember a devastating chapter in its history. One year after the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, the school yearbook included 14 therapy dogs that had helped students and staff cope with the trauma.
The dogs were brought in after the February 14, 2018 tragedy, and they quickly became part of daily life on campus. They sat in classrooms, showed up for prom, and even posed for picture day, giving students a little comfort when they needed it most.
Now those good boys and girls have their own place in the school’s memory book.
The newest Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School yearbook proudly features 14 adorable, fluffy dogs who happily posed for their pictures. However, they are not ordinary dogs. To help cope with the tragic shooting that took place on school grounds on February 14, 2018, Principal Ty Thompson hired 14 therapy dogs. One year after the tragedy, the important work these four-legged friends did was commemorated in the school’s yearbook.

The gunman’s killing spree claimed the lives of 17 students and staff members and injured 17 others. It surpassed the Columbine High School massacre, which killed 13 people in 1999.

Weeks after the attack, resilient students and faculty began returning to their classrooms. The school’s principal, Ty Thompson, ensured that shocked and traumatized children would receive the best possible comfort during lessons by introducing therapy dogs.
They participated in classroom lessons, attended prom, and had their photos taken on picture day.

While it’s understandable that creating a yearbook just one year after such a gruesome tragedy is a heavy burden, the staff made a perfect choice to commemorate the silent healers, 14 therapy dogs, of those who survived a despicable attack on their lives.
