21 Hilarious Dogs That Make Us Wonder "What's Wrong" With Man's Best Friend
Did you know the phrase “Man’s best friend” is over 200 years old? It is first thought to have been said in the late 1700s by King Frederick of Prussia, who was well known for his love of his pet greyhounds.
In 1870, a lawsuit was filed by a farmer whose neighbor shot and killed his dog. In the closing argument, the farmer's attorney, George Graham Vest, offered a eulogy of sorts, at one point saying, “The one absolutely unselfish friend that a man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him and the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog.”
It is from that closing argument that “Man’s best friend” became the common colloquialism to describe these loving, devoted, and goofy four-legged companions. It was later popularized by poet Ogden Nash in 1941.
In 1958, a statue of the farmer's dog, Old Drum, was erected on the Johnson County Courthouse lawn, containing what seems to be a mash-up of Ogden’s poem and a summation of Vest's closing speech: “A man’s best friend is his dog.”
History aside, dogs prove day in and day out that they love to love humans. They provide us with constant love, companionship, protection, and more.
Working dogs help humans herd livestock, hunt, or provide assistance to people with disabilities, enabling them to live their lives as independently as possible. Companion dogs are always there to make us laugh, help us feel safe, and even act as a shoulder to cry on when needed.
