In This Charming Bookstore, A Cat Might Fall Into Your Arms While You're Browsing for Books or Reading
Cupboard Maker Books is the kind of place that makes cat lovers and book lovers equally happy. In this Pennsylvania bookstore, readers can browse the shelves while resident cats wander overhead, and sometimes a foster cat is waiting for a forever home too.
Founded by Jason and Michelle Haring in 1998, the shop has become known for more than new and used books. Over the years, the couple has helped nearly 200 foster cats find permanent homes, while their three resident cats keep watch over the store and the animals passing through it.
From catwalks above the aisles to viral TikTok clips, this bookstore has turned browsing into something a little more unpredictable. One wrong step, and you might leave with a book and a new feline friend.

Here, Cats Rule

They Can Roam Freely

The bookstore is home to Prince Fluffytail, Queen Annika, and Count Zakula, who go by those nicknames, respectively. Jason has built approximately 200 feet of catwalks around the top of the store in the last decade.
Both the resident cats and the foster cats "enjoy playing around up there," he told Newsweek. So you'll see a cat or an image of a cat whenever you glance up at the catwalks.
“We have photos of the 190+ cats that we’ve adopted out running down along the edges of the catwalk,” Jason said. Jason and Michelle are particularly fond of assisting Castaway Critters Animal Rescue in finding forever homes for their shelter animals.
They Will Keep You Company

“People often ask how we can foster and fall in love with so many cats and then watch them get adopted. Because doing so saves their lives,” Jason said. “Every time we find a forever home for one of our fosters, it makes space for our next Castaway Critter.”
It’s a lot like the rescue cat who lost his eye, then found a temporary home at a cat café.
And You Can Adopt One

The Bookstore Has Helped Find Homes for 200 Cats

And the Owners Are Very Proud of That Fact

Cat-loving readers can enjoy posts of the cats wandering the store and learn about the kitties looking for homes on Cupboard Maker Books' TikTok page. Since its debut, a recent post showcasing Mouse, Zak, and Annika strutting down the catwalks has received 2.6 million views.
Perhaps it was the “Beware! Falling Cats!” sign at the beginning of the video that attracted TikTok users’ attention!
