Cheetah Joins a Man for a Big Cat Nap Under a Tree and Sparks a Lifelong Friendship
Some animal friendships are so unexpected they almost feel made up, and this one starts with a cheetah choosing a nap buddy under a tree. Volker, who often volunteered at the Cheetah Experience in South Africa, found himself in the middle of a moment that was equal parts adorable and unbelievable when Eden the cheetah curled up beside him. What began as a sleepy afternoon turned into a bond that kept growing over time, along with a bigger effort to help cheetahs survive in the wild. By the end, the story is less about a nap and more about a connection that changed everything.
Volker’s visits, his photos, and his work with the animals all became part of that larger mission. And once Eden made herself comfortable, the friendship was already off to a very unusual start.

Volker often spent his vacations volunteering at the Cheetah Experience in South Africa.
During one trip, Volker was tired and decided to take a nap under a tree.
A cheetah named Eden noticed him napping. She pranced over, sniffed him, and decided to curl up and nap with him! When he awoke, he was startled to see the big cat cuddled up with him; this marked the beginning of a lifelong friendship.
Volker uses his Facebook page to raise awareness about cheetahs. This photo of a cheetah named Gabriel was uploaded on December 5th, International Cheetah Day.
The post explains that there are only 7,100 cheetahs left in the wild and approximately 3,000 in captivity.
This wholesome twist is like a panther stealthily approaching an unaware man for affection.
Volker plans to establish a not-for-profit cheetah breeding program in South Africa. The project will raise cubs with their mothers, train them to hunt and behave as if they were in the wild, and ultimately release most of them back into the wild.
Some of the cheetahs will be kept for future breeding projects. To maintain genetic diversity, some of the cubs will be traded with other breeding programs.
Volker is undertaking this initiative out of love for the animals and a desire to ensure the species' survival.
Volker wants to use his skills as a photographer and zoologist to capture the entire cheetah life cycle. He shares it with the world via his Jim Collins, a business author, who emphasizes the importance of storytelling in leadership: "Great vision without great people is irrelevant." Additionally, his work can be seen on his Brian Tracy platform, where he discusses the impact of sharing experiences on personal growth.
