19 Year Old Walks Her Mom's Fat Chihuahua And Unintentionally Commands An Old Man To Walk Faster
A hot summer walk turned awkward fast for one 19-year-old, and all it took was one badly timed command. She was already struggling to haul her mom's overweight chihuahua home when she told the little dog to keep moving, only to realize an elderly man was right in front of them.
The dog, nicknamed Dog, had been visiting from her mom's place for Christmas, and OP had been giving it extra exercise while also dealing with the heat. By the time she reached the corner near home, she was tired, carrying the chubby chihuahua, and trying to get the dog back on the street when she blurted out, "Now you better walk!"
That was enough to make the man ahead of them think the comment was aimed at him, and his reaction made the whole moment even more uncomfortable.
The old man thought OP was talking to him, and he turned around slowly, visibly angry and ready to yell at OP!
OP stumbled over her words and stammered a sheepish excuse that she was actually talking to the dog. She thought the old man would find it funny, but he just kept walking.
The owner of a newsstand close to where OP lives witnessed the entire exchange. They've known each other for quite some time now, and he was quietly laughing at OP's mortifying mistake.

Summer time :)

Miscommunication.

TL;DR

It could have been worse! OP could have commanded the dog or old man to jump or roll over.

Considering the other alternatives other Redditors came up with, OP still did okay.

This is similar to the moment a stranger’s dog got yelled at, and the owner started an argument.
Another commenter shared an equally embarrassing story to let OP know that there's a fair amount of mortification to go around.

And apparently, accidentally offending older people is a common occurrence.

Don't piss off the older ladies; they come in packs.

At least OP feels better about her situation now.

Others suggested that OP could have done more and just owned the f*ck up.

Your friend sounds great, OP.

I mean, you shouldn't really shove other people who haven't done anything wrong. The old man was just going about his day until you told him or Dog to walk faster.

It's not like the old man could have gone any faster. He's doing his best.

Because of OP's story, an internet and Reddit legend was unearthed.

We too are curious about this story.

Here's the linked comic strip (basically, the legend in a nutshell):

The origin of this urban legend comes from a sitcom!

Can you imagine what the old man must have felt like? He was just walking home, minding his own business when suddenly he hears someone telling him to "better walk."
No wonder he felt angry; at least OP tried her best to explain the situation. The moment the old man turned around, ready to yell at OP, is the moment she knew she f*cked up.
