Giant Coconut Crabs Crash Family Picnic And Try To Steal Their Food
A family on Christmas Island thought they were getting a peaceful Christmas picnic, until the island sent reinforcements. Not people, not wildlife in the cute way, but giant coconut crabs that showed up like they owned the place.
They lit a campfire, started cooking, and the smell of dinner did what dinner smells do. Except instead of attracting family members, it attracted over 50 robber crabs, and suddenly the table, the barbecue, and basically the whole scene belonged to them.
The family tried to keep eating, but when one crab started climbing right up onto the barbecue, “relaxing” became a whole different mission.
This family was enjoying themselves on a secluded Australian island when they were "attacked" by a group of crabs.
This family had gone camping on Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean, and they had planned a huge picnic for themselves. However, they were taken by surprise when their picnic was interrupted by a large group of Coconut Crabs.

The family didn't really seem bothered by them, and they tried to continue as best as possible.
The family quickly understood what these crabs wanted and what they were on a mission for. These giant Coconut Crabs are also called "robber crabs," which seems to fit them quite well, especially after this encounter.
These crabs started grabbing anything they could reach. They were there to eat.

You can see these crabs really established their dominance by spreading out all around this family.
It was clear what was happening. Here's what they had to say about their encounter: “We just lit our campfire, and as soon as we started cooking, the smell of the food attracted a whole huge number of robber crabs,” the woman said.
“We were sitting down trying to eat our dinner, and they were everywhere!”

There were over 50 crabs, and they were not there to play around.
It seems that these crabs really wanted to let them know that they weren't going anywhere.
“Soon, they began scaling the table, and one even clambered onto the barbecue. We had been wise to set up our tents far from where we had feasted, but unfortunately, one of the families wasn’t as fortunate.”

These photos don't do them justice because these Coconut Crabs are huge.
It's also important to note that these robber crabs have dominated Christmas Island, and they are known to have a large population there.

Here's where you can watch the full video and see just how big and close these crabs were to their family dinner.
The second they started cooking and the campfire was going, the Christmas Island robber crabs came in fast, like the food was a beacon.
While the woman said they were just sitting down to eat, the crabs were grabbing anything they could reach and spreading out around the family.
Then the dominance moment hit, because one crab actually scaled the table and clambered onto the barbecue.
Even with their tents set far away, one family still got hit, proving these over-8-pound, 3-foot-long troublemakers are not messing around.
These crabs can weigh over 8 pounds, and they can exceed a length of 3 feet; plus, they can also live for over 50 years. This is definitely a story to tell, and we're so glad that this family captured this moment and was able to share it with us.
These crabs are huge and are known to be all over Christmas Island, where they were staying, and it's a well-known area that is heavily populated with them.
The family dinner did not end well, and the crabs basically RSVP’d yes.
For another “nature attack” moment, watch these kayakers get spooked by bear-like claws.
