Meet Chico, a cow known for his playful and snuggly personality.
He arrived at The Gentle Barn in 2017 after being saved from a slaughterhouse. Since then, he has become a favorite in the barn because of his cheeky personality.
Chico is remarkable! The Gentle Barn Founder, Ellie Laks, said to The Dodo. He is the leader and tells the others what to do, protects them, and gives his hugs out to all of us freely. He is wise, brave, and extremely loving.
According to Ellie, it was clear that Chico was the herd leader when he first arrived at the barn.
Other cows followed him when he went strolling along the grass and into the woods. Ellie soon realized that in order to gain the trust of all the other cows, she would have to capture Chico's heart first.
Fortunately, this proved to be an easy mission because soon enough, Chico was comfortable eating out of her hand and would always welcome her for some pets and hugs.

And if you love Chico’s cuddly chaos, you’ll melt at the unexpected cow and dog friendship that surprised everyone after playtime.
“Chico is now extremely affectionate and will wrap his neck around me and others in a warm embrace,” Ellie said.
Even though he loves a lot of physical touch, Chico is an independent guy, and he enjoys fooling around in the snow when winter comes. When he gets tired after playtime, he becomes even more cuddly and sleepy.
He tends to fall asleep on the shoulders of the barn's volunteers.

According to Ellie, once their cows learn to trust people, they can become very affectionate and will always crave some form of physical touch.
“Once they have healed, [they] learn to forgive, choose to trust us, lay down, and allow us to cuddle them,” Ellie added. “They cuddle us back by wrapping their necks around us or, in this case, by resting their heads on us.”

Nowadays, Chico is often seen relaxing with his fellow Gentle Barn cows, Johnny Cash, Roo, Houdini, and Eddie. It's a wonderful thing that he was saved from his old slaughterhouse because here, he's free to run around, and there are plenty of shoulders to lean on when he wants to snooze!
