Deaf Man Adopts Adorable Deaf Puppy and Teaches Him Sign Language
Some rescue stories hit a little harder than others, and this one has an especially sweet twist. A deaf man in Maine recently adopted a deaf puppy, and the connection between them was instant.
Thirty-one-year-old Nick Abbott brought home Emerson, a rescue pup who had already survived a rough start. After being pulled from a shelter in Florida at just six weeks old, Emerson battled canine parvovirus, seizures, and hearing loss, but that did not stop him from becoming a playful puppy with a big future.
Now Nick is teaching Emerson sign language, and their bond is already turning heads.
“He doesn’t let it bother him at all, though. He’s a typical puppy,” Lindsay Powers of NFR Maine told Good Morning America.
Lindsay said that Emerson was having a tough time finding a forever home, and perhaps potential adopters were being put off by his deafness.
But then Nick came along, and the two shared a special bond right away.

"Right off the bat, he said, 'I'm deaf too, and I feel like we'd have a good connection,'" Lindsay recalled.
She processed Nick's application right away, and he and Emerson have been inseparable ever since.
Nick has even been teaching Emerson the sign language for 'sit,' 'lay down,' and 'come.'
Nick's mom says he and Emerson were "meant for each other."
