Dutch Artist Puts a Disney-Inspired Spin on Pet Portraits with Stunning Results
I’m obviously behind the times, as I only recently learned the term “Disneyfication.” Perhaps not surprisingly, this term has been used by sociologists since 1959 to describe “the commercial transformation of things or environments into something simplified, controlled, and 'safe'—reminiscent of the Walt Disney brand.”
It’s wild that Disney has had such a widespread and impactful influence on society beyond just enjoying the films and characters; it extends into the actual transformation of places and cultures. However, a Dutch illustrator has given us another meaning for “Disneyfication.”
For Isa Bredt, the 23-year-old artist from the Netherlands, “Disneyfication” is a way to transport animals into the animation world. Through her project Pet Disneyfication, Bredt transforms people's photos of their pets into spot-on Disney-like illustrations.
From the expressions and facial features to more, all of the creatures in her series resemble the classic animated Walt Disney characters we know and love. This is very much intentional, as she credits the 2D animated works from Disney, DreamWorks, and Don Bluth as her greatest inspirations.
After two years of studying Illustration and Animation, she started her pet portrait illustration business in 2019. This has allowed her to combine her passion for animals and art into a full-time job.
She has shared that she tries to capture an animal’s spirit in her portraits, but with her own special twist that makes them look like they could star in their own animated movie. I think it’s safe to say she’s nailed it.
