Feline Felons Cat Cafe Nears Waldorf Closure With Fee-Free Cat Adoptions Before Sept. 7

A wave of adoptions has cleared out the kitten lounge at Feline Felons Cat Cafe in Waldorf, but the cafe itself is now in its final days at the location. It plans to welcome visitors there for the last time on Monday, Sept. 7, as it looks for a new space after lease-related issues.

A final push to place more cats in homes

The cafe is calling its closing stretch the “Purrole Countdown” and urging people to visit, adopt and help spread the word about the cats still available. The response has already moved a large number of animals into homes. Feline Felons said more than 80 cats were adopted during August through the Maryland 3,000 adoption promotion.

Its kitten lounge is temporarily closed because all of the kittens that had been staying there were adopted. That room is set to reopen at noon on Thursday, Sept. 3. Adult cats are still available for visits and adoption.

Feline Felons opened in 2023 as a family-friendly cat lounge where guests could spend time with cats while getting to know animals in need of permanent homes. The business works with the Charles County Animal Care Center, the county shelter in Hughesville.

What changes before the Sept. 7 closure

From Saturday, Sept. 5, through the final day on Monday, Sept. 7, the Charles County Animal Care Center will waive adoption fees for cats at the cafe. The effort, called the “Feline Felons Purrole Push,” is aimed at helping as many of the remaining cats as possible go directly into homes before the doors close.

People interested in adopting are encouraged to book online, because walk-in appointments are not guaranteed. The available-cat list may shift throughout the week as animals are adopted and others arrive from the shelter. Friday, Sept. 4, is the last day the cafe will take in new cats and kittens from the animal care center.

Any cats or kittens still at the cafe when it closes will go back to the Charles County Animal Care Center and remain available for adoption there. Feline Felons said a return of multiple animals at once could add pressure at the shelter, making adoptions during the final week especially important.

Ways supporters can help, and what comes next

Visitors who are not ready to adopt can still support the cafe by reserving time in the cat lounges, shopping in the boutique or sharing information about adoptable animals. From Friday, Sept. 4, through Monday, Sept. 7, the cafe will offer a discounted all-access appointment for both the cat and kitten lounges at 50% off.

Customers with unused gift cards, certificates, subscriptions or punch-card visits are being asked to use them by Sept. 7, because they will not be redeemable after the closure. After the final visitor day, the cafe plans a closing yard sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, and Sunday, Sept. 13, featuring items such as cat trees, toys, bedding, shop displays and Feline Felons memorabilia.

The business says its biggest challenge is finding a new home. It is seeking a freestanding building of about 3,000 square feet in a visible location, with reasonable rent and a landlord willing to accommodate a cat cafe. Even as the Waldorf site prepares to close, the goal remains the same: helping more shelter cats find families.
