Huesos, a stray in Huesos, Argentina, didn’t just get rescued, he got a second act. One Cordoba Dog Police Division handler saw something in him, and suddenly this scrappy pup went from everyday street life to a working service dog built for public events.

And that’s the vibe across all ten stories, from Dottie the springer spaniel scanning railway crowds for explosives in England to Ryzhiy, the corgi who spent years sniffing out dangerous goods and contraband at Russian bus and train stations. Each dog has a different job, a different team, and a different timeline, plus the added pressure of doing it in real places where people are watching, traveling, and expecting safety.

So buckle up, because these aren’t just “good dog” headlines, they’re full-on community storylines with happy endings and one very busy nose.

1. Huesos, Argentina

Huesos, meaning "bones" in English, was rescued by a member of the Cordoba Dog Police Division, transforming from a stray pup to a service dog in no time.

For nine years, he toured the Argentinian province as part of the exhibition squad, entertaining crowds at shows, ceremonies, academic events, and anniversaries with his tricks. After bringing joy to many, this mixed-breed dog retired in 2018.

2. Dottie, England

Before you picture a quiet retirement, remember Huesos spent nine years touring Cordoba province, putting on tricks at shows, ceremonies, and academic events.

Meet Dottie, the springer spaniel who became a member of the British Transport Police in 2019. This pup plays a crucial role in ensuring railway safety by detecting and alerting her handlers to potential threats such as explosives.

Alongside her trainer, Dottie works and resides within her unit. Off duty, this friendly pup enjoys receiving hugs and making new acquaintances.

3. Jaks, Canada

3. Jaks, Canada

After an illustrious eight-year career, this Belgian Malinois bid farewell to the Canadian Ministry of the Environment. During his service, he assisted officials in numerous investigations and activities aimed at monitoring the responsible use of natural resources. As part of his duties, Jaks participated in community events, visited parks, and engaged with students at schools.

Though retired, Jaks remains committed to serving his community. He now resides with one of the ministry officials who adopted him, continuing to bring joy and companionship to those around him.

4. Ryzhiy, Russia

Then Dottie takes over the spotlight in 2019, alerting her British Transport Police unit to threats like explosives while she lives and works right alongside her handlers.

On July 1, 2020, Russia bid farewell to its sole corgi police dog as Ryzhiy embarked on his well-deserved retirement. Serving with the Nizhny Novgorod police agency for seven and a half years, Ryzhiy utilized his formidable sniffing abilities to detect dangerous goods and contraband at bus and train stations.

But retirement doesn't mean slowing down for Ryzhiy. Instead, he continues to stay active by training for upcoming dog agility contests, showcasing his agility and skills in new and exciting ways.

5. Kiah, USA

5. Kiah, USA

Rescued from a shelter after being found injured in a supermarket parking lot, this lovable dog has since become a trailblazer as the first pit bull officer for the Poughkeepsie City Police Department in New York State. Kiah's duties include detecting various substances and tracking missing persons.

However, Kiah and her handler are on a mission that goes beyond police work. They're challenging the stigma associated with her breed, advocating that it's a dog's character that truly matters, not their physical appearance or breed stereotypes. Together, they're breaking barriers and changing perceptions one paw at a time.

Skye’s 200-plus rescues are the kind of bravery that earned the PDSA Order of Merit after 11 years of service.

6. Chato, Perú

Meanwhile, Jaks in Canada isn’t tracking contraband, he’s helping officials monitor responsible natural resource use, even visiting parks and schools during his eight-year run.

Once a stray dog, Chato found his calling when a police officer adopted and trained him, making him his trusted partner in Peru's National Police special operations unit. As a senior officer and member of the search and rescue team, Chato accompanies his partner everywhere, even on motorcycle journeys.

With his distinctive uniform featuring glasses, a vest, and a beret, Chato has become one of the most beloved characters in the force, capturing the hearts of many with his dedication and service.

7. Frida, Mexico

7. Frida, Mexico

Frida became a source of comfort for Mexicans on September 19, 2017, following an earthquake that rattled the country. This Labrador Retriever not only assisted in rescue efforts but also uplifted people's spirits with her reassuring presence, adorned with a distinctive visor and boots that protected her eyes and paws.

Over her illustrious nine-year career, Frida saved the lives of twelve individuals and participated in up to fifty-three rescue operations across Mexico, Haiti, Guatemala, and Ecuador. Although she officially retired in 2019, Frida continues to serve by assisting the Secretary of the Navy in training a new generation of search and rescue dogs.

8. Chola, Spain

And when Ryzhiy clocks out in 2020 after seven and a half years sniffing bus and train stations, he doesn’t slow down, he just swaps enforcement for agility training.

She remains in active service with the National Police Corps of Spain, where she assists in detecting narcotics and counterfeit banknotes. While these are her primary duties, the cocker spaniel also occasionally provides therapy and is in high demand for such services.

At seven years old, Chola is nearing retirement from the canine unit. However, she will continue to reside with her handler, along with the other six dogs her owner has adopted. During her retirement, she will enjoy plenty of fun and love during her days off.

9. Thomas, Colombia

Thomas found a new home with one of the patrollers of the Immediate Action Command of the Colombian National Police. He was one of five puppies born to a dog rescued by the unit, and he was the only one chosen to join the surveillance team.

From a young age, Thomas showed enthusiasm whenever he heard the roar of motorcycles and quickly learned to recognize the sound of patrol cars' sirens. His handler noticed his natural aptitude for the environment, so Thomas began accompanying him on patrols. Today, this dynamic duo continues to protect the community while also promoting responsible pet adoption.

10. Mike, Chile

This charming Labrador Retriever embarked on his journey in law enforcement at the Carabineros Canine Training School at the age of eight months. With his playful yet focused demeanor, he quickly mastered the tasks required of a police dog, particularly in detecting various substances.

During his illustrious career dedicated to maintaining security and order, Mike, alongside his human partner, contributed significantly to apprehending illicit substances, totaling half a ton. Recognizing his invaluable service, Mike was honored with a well-deserved tribute and awarded a medal upon his retirement in 2018. Now, he enjoys his golden years in well-deserved relaxation.

Each one of these dogs proves safety can be built, one wag, one alert, and one impossible sniff at a time.
