Meet Squish: A Perfectly Imperfect Rescue Pup
Squish the rescue pup had a beginning that would break most hearts. Severely injured and abandoned, he ended up at the Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter in terrible shape, and his future looked painfully uncertain.
Then a veterinary intern at the hospital where he was being evaluated decided he deserved one quiet night away from cages and kennels. That small act changed everything for the dog who had already been through so much.
By morning, Squish had a new path ahead, and it was one no one saw coming.
Squish came from some harsh beginnings in life, but thanks to the love of Dr. Danielle Boyd, he has recovered more than one would have imagined possible. Today, his crooked jaw and squishy, malformed face are a beacon of hope.
With so much reconstructive surgery having been done on Squish's jaw, his love for the tennis ball is astounding. Boyd said:
I cried seeing his excitement as he picked up a tennis ball for the first time, and that was only the beginning of his little victories.
Today, Squish loves his tennis ball... and he prefers hard food!
Squish is bursting with personality, known to love hiking, sticks, dirty water, and, most importantly, smelling flowers.
Dr. Boyd reflected on the timing of everything, and it is definitely a testament to how fate intertwines special dogs like Squish with humans like Danielle. When Squish first arrived at the shelter that once tried to seal his fate, it was the same week that Danielle had lost her 14-year-old heart and soul dog, and she had been grieving terribly.
Danielle now believes that she needed Squish as much as he needed her. We couldn't agree more.
It also reminded us of Max, the shelter dog who kept smiling after nine years of rejection.
At the same time, Danielle acknowledges everyone who was involved in making Squish's life today a reality:
I would not have this incredible dog without the amazing veterinarians and veterinary technicians who made it possible for him to undergo successful surgeries. I am forever grateful to all who fought for him and allowed me to be so very lucky to call him mine.
Also on Squish's to-do list? Training to be a therapy dog! Boyd says:
He loves kids, and I want him to make them smile and show them how well he does with his disabilities, and that it’s okay to be different.
Having overcome his harrowing ordeal and found true love with his human companion, Danielle, Squish is "spreading happiness, one Squishy smile at a time." He spends his days in the veterinary hospital where Dr. Boyd works. She says that not only does he show clients whose pets are facing eye removal surgery how happy he is with one eye, but he is also a favorite of the entire staff:
Employees come to visit him in my office when they need a little Squish love.
And now that Squish's story is out there, his Squishy face is beginning to make rounds all over the Internet. Because who doesn't love a happy story with a sweet face?
