Woman Disappears On A Bender And Leaves A Puppy Behind, Then Explodes When The Dog Gets Rehomed
A “couple of weeks” can turn into months when the person making promises never follows through. That’s the trap OP says they fell into after letting their sister stay with them, and it ended with a decision that set the whole family on fire.
OP says their 32-year-old sister struggles with addiction and has a history of neglect, including with animals and even her own kids, who are currently being cared for by OP’s mother.
About six months ago, OP allowed the sister to stay in their home. Within two weeks, the sister brought home a large-breed puppy without permission.
For the next three months, OP and their husband watched the dog get treated in ways that made them sick. OP says the puppy spent long stretches locked in a cage and was even tied up with barely any slack to move. Then in November, the sister disappeared for several days and returned with a new plan: she and her boyfriend would move upstate to “get sober.”
That’s when the dog became OP’s problem. The sister and boyfriend convinced OP’s husband the puppy could stay for a short period if they provided food and paid for care. OP says they already knew it wouldn’t stay short.
Since November, the sister extended the timeline repeatedly and contributed almost nothing, only one bag of food and one round of treatment, even as OP says the dog needed better nutrition and consistent care.
By February, the family wanted the dog pushed onto OP’s mother next, despite harsh winter conditions.
OP chose a different route and rehomed the puppy with trusted friends where the dog would be loved and still remain in OP’s life. The sister called it theft, and the rest of the family piled on.

Let’s dig into the details

A bit of backstory

OP’s sister ended up leaving her dog with them with an agreement that she would provide food and pay OP’s husband to cater to it for a couple of weeks

Over the next few months, OP’s sister renegaded on their agreement several times. This went on till OP finally set a firm boundary with an ultimatum

OP kept insisting that her sister must fond a permanent solution for the dog.In addition, she ruled out the possibility of shifting responsibility to their mom, who already had much on her own plate

After much back and forth, OP decided to give the dog to some dear friends who she trusted to take good care of him

At the moment, OP’s sister and the entire family have been harassing and abusing her for rehoming the dog

We gathered some interesting comments from the Reddit community

“NTA: the dog is better off in a home where his life is better.”

“You recognize what that dog needed and you did the right thing in finding him a better home.”

“Obvious NTA Your entire family is idiotic. Please give the dog to your friend so he can live his best life.”

“If your family are hassling you, give them a call and ask them when they want to come pick up the dog to take themselves.”

OP didn’t take a dog from a stable home. OP stepped in after months of broken promises and a clear pattern of neglect, then chose the option that gave the dog safety and consistency.
The family’s anger sounds less like concern for the puppy and more like fear of confronting the sister’s behavior. Rehoming with trusted friends also keeps the outcome humane, not dramatic.
