Black cats get a bad rap every October, but one Los Angeles pet photographer decided to put the spotlight on them instead. The result is a Halloween photo series that shows off just how striking, playful, and photogenic these cats can be.

Animal advocate and photographer Casey Elise Christopher created the portraits to help challenge old superstitions and highlight cats from West Los Angeles Animal Services and Milo’s Sanctuary. The images below give each cat its own moment, and they make a pretty strong case for looking twice at the shelter’s black cats.
