The Magical Moment Vanilla, 28-Year-Old Chimpanzee, Saw The Sky For The First Time
Vanilla is 28 years old, and for most of her life, she never saw the sky. This chimpanzee spent years inside a biomedical research lab in New York, where sunlight and real outdoor life were basically off the menu, and her days were filled with screens and routines she did not choose.
Animal rights activists have called the place a “hellhole,” and the reason this story hits so hard is that Vanilla’s freedom did not come gradually. It arrived only after she and her sister were moved to the Save the Chimps sanctuary in Florida, where the world looks different, smells different, and moves differently.
Then, in that first moment outside, Vanilla looked up like she had been waiting forever.
Vanilla the 28-year-old chimp recently experienced her first taste of freedom after living her entire life in a biomedical research lab in New York.
The laboratory is notorious among animal rights activists and has been labeled a "hellhole," with animals deprived of sunlight and forced to spend their days in front of television screens.
When Vanilla and her sister were finally moved to the Save the Chimps sanctuary in Florida, their lives changed forever.
Vanilla was "clearly elated to have suddenly found freedom."

When Vanilla and her sister finally landed at Save the Chimps in Florida, the “elated” feeling was immediate, like her whole body understood what the lab never gave her.
Vanilla’s “first sky” moment also echoes new vintage footage of chimpanzees “saying” real human words.
The lab’s notorious TV-and-no-sun setup is what makes this clip so wild, because now Vanilla is getting real sky time instead of staring at screens.
And it gets even better, because she is not just surviving on the island, she is making friends with all 18 chimps.
Even Dwight, the alpha male, is part of the fun, since Vanilla has a playful habit of snatching food from him like she owns the place.
She's enjoying every bit of her freedom and is even making new friends.
"She seems elated to have her own world, finally experiencing the closest thing to a natural habitat," Dan Mathews said. "She is embracing it."
"Vanilla gets along with all 18 chimps on her island and shares a playful relationship with the alpha male Dwight, often snatching food from him," said a spokesperson for Save the Chimps. Sounds like Vanilla is in her element!
