Trainee Police Dog Gets Fired for Being Too Friendly, So He's Had a Career Change
19 Apr 2019
Gavel is a German Shepherd from the northern Australian state of Queensland. When he was a puppy, he was sent off to train with the Queensland Police Department; however, it was quickly decided that he was just too friendly to be a police dog, which needs to perform important work like biting people and generally not being very nice.

Gavel was fired from his training, but he bounced back quickly, landing a job with the Queensland State Government as Vice-Regal Dog. This important role means Gavel’s duties now include greeting visitors at the official home and workplace of the Queensland Governors.
