Meet The Uniquely Bizarre Pig Breed Known For Its Sheep-like Appearance And Canine Behavior
22 Sep 2021
The Mangalitsa is one of the strangest pigs you can come across, and that is exactly why people keep talking about it. With its thick, curly coat and calm, almost pet-like personality, this Hungarian breed looks more like a sheep than a pig.

It also has a dramatic backstory. The breed nearly disappeared during the communist era in Hungary, before animal geneticist Peter Toth stepped in after the fall of the Berlin Wall and helped save the remaining pigs.

That rescue left the world with a fluffy, unusual breed that still turns heads today.
Due to its endearingly fluffy look, the Mangalitsa pig has acquired the affectionate moniker "sheep pig."

Adult Mangalitsas can weigh between 280 and 300 pounds and have the perfect combination of meat and fat.

They come in an assortment of colors, from blonde to black-blond to reddish-brown.

On average, Mangalitsas can produce between 5 and 8 piglets per litter.

They have a mild temperament, which makes them great companions and a perfect addition to your homestead.
