Skunk spray sticks to everything. If you’ve ever dealt with it, you know the smell clings to fabric, skin, and your sanity. This family has been hit by it more than once.

Their house backs up to a patch of woods where all sorts of animals wander through, but one visitor shows up a little too often. A skunk keeps squeezing through the fence at night, and the family dog has already been sprayed four separate times.

After the fourth disaster, the Mom changed the routine. No more letting the dog out alone once the sun goes down.

Everyone agreed that nighttime bathroom breaks had to happen on a leash. It wasn’t fun, but it kept the dog safe and the house from smelling like a chemical cloud.

For weeks, the rule worked just fine. Then came the night everything fell apart.

The Mom asked their teenager to take the dog outside before bed. Instead of clipping on the leash, the teen opened the back door and let the dog run out like usual.

A few minutes later, the familiar smell blasted through the yard. The dog had been skunked again.

This time, the mom refused to shoulder the whole mess alone. She told her teen that since he had ignored the rule, he had to wash the dog. Even tho she offered help, she made it clear that the bulk of the work was his.

The teen didn’t take it well. He said the consequence was unfair and called her a horrible mother for giving such a responsibility.

The mom held her ground and ensured he served his punishment. However, she’s been wondering if she went too far with this.

Here are the screenshots so you can read the full story yourself.

Rules exist for a reason, and when a child decides to skip one, there will definitely be consequences.

Cleaning a skunked dog is miserable, but the punishment came directly from the choice he made.

Both sides had real feelings in the moment. However, the Reddit community has backed OP’s decision and urged her not to feel bad for standing her ground.

What do you think about how this played out?
