Horse Is Reunited With His Girlfriend After Two Years Of Separation
Two wild horses were separated for more than two years, and their reunion turned into a moment people could not stop watching. Phoenix and Ghost had once been part of the same story, then life, rescue efforts, and captivity pulled them apart.
Skydog Sanctuary stepped in to help bring them back together, with Clare Staples and her team working to make the reunion happen. The story began with Phoenix escaping a catch, then circling back to help Ghost, who was still trapped with the other wild horses.
That first act of loyalty set everything else in motion.
Meet Ghost and Phoenix
This was the photo that started it all.
Clare Staples was scrolling through Facebook when she noticed this photo, originally shared by the American Wild Horse Campaign. She was so impressed by the shot and the story behind it that she decided to do everything in her power to reunite Phoenix with his soulmate!
However, it was not that easy.
Clare and her team dedicated most of their time trying to adopt both horses.
But it proved to be difficult. “They let us know that both Phoenix and his female companion would eventually be released back to the wild, which we were happy about,” she said.
However, the chances of releasing them into the wild decreased day by day.
Almost a year later, Phoenix was still captive.
Ghost was also nowhere to be found, and Clare discovered that the mustang would not be released into the wild after all. She then decided to adopt the stallion.
Her application was successful, but she was still saddened that she could not reunite the two horses at that time. “I wanted to give him back the freedom he so desperately wanted on the day of his capture. I always looked for his mare and never saw her. We opened the trail door, and he ran out… I always felt like there was a little bit of loss with him,” Clare said.
That reunion took patience, and a lot of it.
It’s similar to the woman who rescued an intentionally starved elderly horse and watched it bond with another.
To her delight, her determination became fruitful as she and her team were able to reunite Phoenix and Ghost.

Animals, as precious as they are, also deserve all the love and connection in the world. It's wonderful to see them form bonds with each other, and it's even more remarkable that people like Clare and her team go to such great lengths to ensure they are reunited!
