Canine Lovers Reveal Their Dream Purebred Dogs, And Some Responses Are Just Too Wholesome
A dog lover in Mexico lived through the kind of quiet, relentless reality that turns “purebred” into a whole lot more than a label. She started with one adorable Shih Tzu from an animal rescue, then watched her life get reshaped by what was missing in her new country.
When she moved to Mexico, there were no spay or neuter clinics, so she volunteered once the first clinic opened for Mexicans only. She lost Cuddles at 15, then ended up rescuing nine dogs total, keeping three because love and responsibility are heavier than any shopping list.
And once people saw that story, the comments turned into dream-dog wishlists that are weirdly wholesome, wildly specific, and totally heart-on-sleeve.
This dog lover is just admirable.
First of all, I would not buy a dog. I will only get dogs from a certified rescue group. I am Canadian-born but have lived in Mexico for many years.
Before I came to Mexico, I went to one of the animal rescues and got the cutest little purebred Shih Tzu. I don't remember what I paid for her, but she was worth a million.
When I moved to Mexico, there were no spay or neuter clinics. About eight years ago, an American or Canadian opened the first clinic, which was for Mexicans only. I volunteered at that clinic.
They are what we call street dogs, but thank goodness there are not very many now. I had to put Cuddles to puppy heaven when she was 15.
I ended up rescuing nine dogs, and I still have three of those that I rescued.
I am 81 years young and am in pretty good shape.
I would rescue many more, but I think I will keep my three for now. My dogs have been the best company I could ever want.
They give you nothing but love if you treat them with the love and respect that they deserve.

This dog lover wants a superior GSD.
I would want a well-proven German Shepherd Dog from one of the old West German/Czech working lines… a +/- 2-year-old… not a puppy…
Why…???
I’ve been a GSD fan since I was a kid, and though I have had many great ones in my life, I want one superior dog before I’m too old to measure up to the demands…

One user is in awe of the elegance of Tibetan Mastiffs.
I would rescue a Tibetan Mastiff. They are so regal and huge!!!
They are so elegant.

This dog lover from the US has considered their needs and wants an American Water Spaniel.
I live in the US, and I could basically do this. Most breeds are present in the US or Europe, and if I was willing to pay for it, we could technically afford just about any reasonable dog, even if we imported from Europe or something.
The dog that fits our needs, lifestyle, and goals right now is the American Water Spaniel, and that will probably be our next dog.
I wouldn’t mind a classic Labrador before the working-show split—something in the 55 lbs range that had beauty, brains, and bird sense instead of making me pick at most two of the three and replacing the other with poor structure, poor temperament, or lack of breed distinctives.

Coton de Tulear's personality will remind you of the sweetness of cotton candy.
Coton de Tulear. The three I’ve met were really sweet.
They don’t shed; they have hair that you need to trim often. Very nice personalities.

Some dog lovers are fortunate enough to already own the dog they've always wanted.
I already own that dog:

It’s also like the curious online user asking if any dog can become a guide dog, and getting the blunt “no.”
GSDs are the most coveted, but this user wants something specific.
German Shepherd Dog, well, a female from a companion line and fully genetically checked for hip dysplasia and other health issues. As to why, I grew up with them, and to me, they are the very best dogs in the world.
They work their way into your heart and never leave it.
I could carry on, but you have to know the soft-as-butter goofballs for yourself.

An owner declares that their current pet would be their last dog.
I currently own the dog I wanted to complement my life and my needs. I cannot, at this moment, think of a dog I would want.
Finding dogs has never been an issue for me; I have been doing it all my life. I have access to people in Europe and the States, but, again, currently, I am happy with my dog, and I believe he will be my last dog ever.

Golden retrievers are also a popular option.
Golden retriever. I’m on my third.
The other two lived long and healthy lives. Dogs give us more than we give them.

It's difficult when a German Shepherd Dog (GSD) experiences hip problems. That's why this user has specifically mentioned that they want their GSD to be free from the same health issue.
If you could absolutely guarantee me a German Shepherd wouldn’t have hip dysplasia, I would pay a lot. But they all do, and it’s absolutely horrible.
My favorite breed, but I can’t deal with that again. My next favorite is a Mastiff/Dane mix, Daniff. But they don’t live long.
My next pup is going to be a straight-up mutt… probably something with Staffy in it. Purebreds are inbred and unhealthy.

That same “no shortcuts” energy shows up again when the GSD fan refuses to settle for a puppy and insists on a well-proven German Shepherd from old West German and Czech working lines.
Meanwhile, the Tibetan Mastiff lover chimes in like, yes, please, give me regal and huge, because elegance is the whole point.
Then the US-based poster gets practical, talking about how importing from Europe is possible and locking in the American Water Spaniel as the next move for their lifestyle.
Dog owners will always have the final say in choosing the breed they want. However, it's crucial for them to ensure that the dog's temperament aligns with their needs and lifestyle.
If the dog's activity level doesn't match the owner's lifestyle, the dog may end up being rehomed or surrendered to a shelter. Therefore, let's make responsible choices when selecting a dog breed.
Nobody in that comment section is just chasing a breed, they’re chasing the kind of love that lasts.
Wait until you see the $300 Craigslist purebred GSD ad that sparked “choosing beggar” backlash.
