Unbelievable Wedding: A Woman Married Her Cat So They Could Stay Together
Deborah Hodge did something few people would ever consider, and it turned a quiet park in southeast London into the setting for an unforgettable wedding. The 49-year-old single mom from London married her cat, India, on April 19, with a legally ordained friend presiding over the ceremony.
After the vows, Deborah, her cat, and a group of friends shared a picnic and a day that was equal parts sweet and surreal. She works as a life coach, and she knows her children and friends find the whole thing confusing, but for her, it was a way to show how much India means to her after losing three pets in the past.
Now the photos are doing the rounds, and the story only gets more unusual from there.
Deborah and her beloved cat
“She is fundamentally the most important thing in my life after my children,” Deborah said.

Her furry friend has been with her since 2017
In 2020, a car hit her, and she lost her leg. Since that tragic event, her three-legged cat depends on her more than ever.

Earlier, Deborah had lost three pets because of her landlords
Her previous landlord made her give up her two canine friends, Starshine and Siri. Then, five years ago, her current landlord pressured her to give up a cat named Jamal, or she would be evicted.
At that moment, she had to comply. But she still feels the pain of lost furry friends.

She said losing Siri, Starshine, and Jamal left her determined not to go through that pain again.
"I’m on my last pennies, I have nothing to lose and everything to gain, so I married my cat!"
“We lost Siri and Starshine, and then Jamal, and I do not want to lose another beloved pet. I vowed in sickness and in health, in death do us part, and I meant it.”
“It absolutely broke my heart. Your pets become part of your family, and it was just absolutely devastating having to say goodbye to them,” explained Deborah.
Despite the fact that her landlord doesn't allow pets, she had to try to convince him
After sending him countless emails, he finally agreed. Deborah said:
“I refuse to be parted from her. I’d rather live on the streets than be without her. I recited vows under the universe that no man will ever tear India and me apart.
I set out my intention that I would never be separated from the animal I adore. I can’t be without India. She is truly a sensation; she is so friendly and amazing.”

That is where things got messy.
She could still be evicted because she lost her job in March, but she believes that everything will be fine
“By marrying India, I need any future landlords to know that we come as a package, and we cannot be separated under any circumstances as she is as important to me as my children. I don’t believe in organized religion; however, I do have faith.
India always came back, even after losing a leg. I am her universe, and that is why I married her,” said Deborah.

She stated she knows that some people may think her wedding is crazy
“Although some might think it’s a stupid idea, I wanted to be able to show physically, by holding the ceremony in front of my friends—even though they thought I was bonkers—that I am very serious. I had a group of friends there for the ceremony—they all think I’ve gone batsh*t crazy, but we all had a lovely day.
My kids weren’t there on the day; they just think that Mummy has lost the plot,” Deborah explained.

For the ceremony, Deborah wore a tuxedo
She was inspired by her cat's natural look and wanted them to match outfits. For the special event, the cat wore a gold lamé cape and bow tie.
People are definitely going to have opinions about this one.
We can all understand how terrible it was for her to lose her furry family members. Such a loss can indeed leave a huge trauma.
But is she insane for marrying her cat? The suffering that pet parents go through when their landlords make them give up family pets is truly tough.
But we are curious: what would you do in those circumstances?
