Photographer Emphasizes The Magnificence Of Black Cats By Taking Pictures Of Them Against A Black Backdrop, And The Results Are Stunning
Black cats have spent centuries battling a bad reputation, but one photographer is giving them a very different kind of spotlight. Casey Elise Christopher is using striking portraits to show just how beautiful these cats can be when the background disappears.
Her black-on-black photo series puts the focus on their eyes, expressions, and personalities, while also drawing attention to how often black cats are overlooked in shelters. The project is part art, part advocacy, and it gives these animals a chance to be seen in a new way.
And once you see the results, it is hard to look at black cats the same way again.
Christopher is a lifestyle and pet photographer based in LA.

Christopher created a series of photos that feature black felines against a black background.

That simple setup makes the whole series stand out.
Through this setup, she can highlight the beauty of the cats and make their personalities stand out.

Their black fur and the black backdrop make their eyes more visible; it's like we're looking into their souls.

Some are shy, while others are confident.

But what's common among these creatures is that they're looking for acceptance and love.

And that is exactly the point of the project.

Statistics reveal that the adoption rates of black cats are the lowest.

Moreover, they also have the highest euthanasia rates.

The photographer's social media is full of cat pictures.

She has also worked with blind cats.

She has always been interested in photography.

It was in December 2014 when she met her first cat, Imogen.
She adopted the feline from an animal shelter. The little furball set her on a path to saving other felines.

Imogen inspired the young photographer to volunteer at a shelter.

It was also through Christopher's cat that she found her passion. She is an expert in pet photography.

That first shelter visit changed how she saw the photos being used there.
Christopher recalls how crowded and noisy the shelter was.
Another thing she noticed was the pictures in the cats' cages. For her, they weren't doing the poor furballs justice.
The shelter used old cameras, and the lighting wasn't that good. The pictures were mostly of cats hiding in the corners.
That was when the idea hit her. She thought that if she used a newer camera with excellent lighting and if the shoot was done in a place where the cats were comfortable, it would create better results.
Better pictures would entice people to visit the shelter after seeing the kitties on the website. It would also increase the chances of these felines getting adopted.
Since then, the photographer has been working with more shelters in an effort to help the cats find their forever homes.
